“HOKUSAI : BEYOND THE WAVE”

La Grande Vague et portrait de Hokusai

The exhibition brings together the woodblock prints of Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), the Japanese master whose Great Wave off Kanagawa is one of the most recognised images in the world.

Follow his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and see how a single line can hold the force of the sea.

The life of a master

Hokusai started painting as a child and kept working for seven decades, producing tens of thousands of drawings, sketches and woodblock prints. He changed his name many times and reinvented his style until the end of his life.

Champ de tournesols et de lavande

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” Van Gogh started out drawing as a child, but first became known for sketches of his neighbors and friends. He worked as an art salesman, in a bookstore and as a preacher before deciding, around 1880, to become an artist. The works of his early Dutch period are dark and sharp, and one of the most famous is The Potato Eaters, painted in 1885. In 1886 he joined his brother Theo in Paris, where he met Pissarro, Monet and Gauguin, and where the colors of his paintings began to lighten and to be applied in short brushstrokes. He later moved south to Arles, hoping to found a school of art with his friends. After a period of illness he was sent to the asylum in Saint-Remy for medical treatment, and he painted over 1,000 portraits.
